:: ...like Johnny & June ::

Picture
Johnny Cash and June Carter.  I bet you're somewhat familar with the story.   I had heard of them, but they were long before my time, so I wasn't as familar with the story as one might think.  This is how it was told to me:

When Johnny first saw June he was instantly taken with her.  He couldn't get her out of his head.  They started touring together, but both were married to other people at the time so nothing could develop from their relationship.  After several years, both Johnny and June ended up separating and divorcing their spouses.  Johnny never could get June out of his head.  He loved her from day one.  Still touring together, Johnny repeatedly asked June to marry him.  Everytime she said no for one reason or another.  Johnny was heavy into drugs and other things that June didn't agree with.  But their connection was undeniable.  One day, while on stage, Johnny stopped mid song and asked June to marry him in front of thousands of people.  He said he wouldn't continue the song until she said yes.  June had no choice but to say yes.  After all the trials and turmoil they both endured together, marriage seemed appropriate.  It wasn't easy, but nothing could seem to break the connection that sparked a flame all those years ago.  Johnny and June finally married, making their love a world wide story.  When June died years later, Johnny decided he couldn't live without her.  Four short months later, Johnny died.

This story was ad libbed by me...but it was once told to me, pretty close to the above mentioned, by Ryan.  We were on our way back from NC (his first trip to meet my family).  Ryan had mentioned how great of a time he had.  He mentioned that at one point he looked across the room at me while I interacted with my family, and he couldn't help but think to himself how lucky he was to have me in his life.  He followed that sentiment by this story, ending with "that's how I feel.  Our love is like Johnny and June"  He told me about a song that expressed this love "Johnny and June" by Heidi Newfield.  I listened to that song as soon as we got back home.  Later that week we watched "Walk the Line" because I had never seen it.  When the movie was over, I turned and looked at Ryan and said "a love like Johnny and June."  Ever since then, our song has been "Johnny and June."  And every day we're together, our love, our life, our connection resembles their love story more and more!

"I wanna love like Johnny and June...rings of fire burning with you...I wanna walk the line, walk the line...till the end of time..." (Johnny and June by Heidi Newfield)
